The Tuesday Chain-gang
Speed: 17 mph +
Duration: 1hr (approx)
For riders who are comfortable riding in close proximity with other riders, and can do so in a safe manner.
The Tuesday weekly chain-gang is aimed at, and most suited to, riders who are already comfortable riding at pace in close proximity with other riders, and can do so in a safe manner. This isn’t to say the rides are closed off to newer riders though. Dynamic assessment will take place throughout rides to ensure both safety and development of all riders.
During the winter the rides take place on a circuit based on Broadfield, meeting 7:25pm at Broadfield Stadium and typically last 40-60 minutes. The focus is more on achieving a high end work-out than any structured riding.
Once evening light allows, the rides move to circuits centred on Charlwood, meeting 6:55pm at Charlwood Shops and tend to be around the one hour mark. These introduce pace lines and concepts such as through and off to the rides on top of the quality physical work out.
The chain-gang rides build skills and fitness useful across all racing genres particularly road racing.
There is a specific risk assessment for the chain-gang and all riders and potential riders are expected to be familiar with its contents and to abide by behaviours detailed within. The risk assessment can be found here – https://www.crawleywheelers.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Crawley-Wheelers-Cycling-Club-Chain-Gang-Risk-Assessment-September-24.pdf
